Will I ever learn!!!??

Report for Thursday:

Oh my goodness – seriously, will i EVER learn!!?? Sometimes I wonder how I can be so ridiculous to do the same thing over and over again and get the same disastrous results. So those brownies I made yesterday – not good. I did very well yesterday with eating only one very small brownie. This morning I again ate one pretty small brownie – not terrible, but I really shouldn’t have. Did fine with eating all day at work. Got home, and just sunk back into to old habits. I told myself I just wanted one little sliver of brownie. So I grabbed the pan and shaved off a little sliver standing at the stove – the another, and another, and just one more really can’t hurt. This is by far my biggest struggle – eating sweets and just nibbling away in little bitty bits rationalizing to myself. I ended up eating a decent amount (maybe the equivalent of two very large brownies). The worst part is they weren’t even all that wonderful and I certainly didn’t enjoy eating them b/c I was just standing there nibbling. I should know better! By the way, these weren’t your average 200 calorie a serving brownies. They have an additional stick of butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1.5 cups of choc chips, 1.5 cups of graham crackers, and a whole package of caramels! Super high calorie. To be completely honest, here’s a picture of what I have eaten since last night:

Okay, needless to say, I’m really mad at myself, but I’m doing my very best to move on. Immediately following the brownie incident, I drug myself to the Y, and let me tell you, it was so COLD, that there was not a bone in my body that wanted to leave my warm house to head for the Y. But I went, and I had the best, most intense, calorie blasting workout I’ve had all year. I’m serious, I was dead by the time I was done, and it felt great. I used Cardio Coach Volume 5 on my ipod and it was wonderful. I used to use them all the time, but it’s been over a year, and I had forgotten how good and motivating they are.

Here’s the journal:

  • Cheese Omelet (240)
  • 3 Lindor Chocolate Truffles (230)
  • Sam’s Choice Thai Coconut Chicken (350)
  • Sugar Free Pudding (60)
  • Way too much super-high calorie brownies (1200?)
  • Total cals eaten: 2080
  • Cals burned through exercise: 600
  • Net cals: 1480

Don’t fret….either cut up the brownies in small managable portion and freeze them or throw them out. They are trouble.

I found that if I meet my calories for the day (or Weight Watchers points) I have less and less craving attacks. Maybe you did not have enough during the day to hold you over so that you could make a healthier choice. Here are my suggestions that I found on the Biggest Loser website:
    Seven Keys to Nutrition Success
    1) Eating every 3-4 hours and having 5-6 small meals/snacks per day
    2) Eating protein and/or fat with carbs at meals and snacks
    3) Choosing high fiber carbs and not white flour carbs. Aim for at least 25 grams of fiber daily.
    4) Making sure that you have 2-4 ounces of protein at lunch and dinner
    5) Don’t cut your fat intake too low. Choose at least 1-2 servings of healthy fats, like nuts, seeds, fish, avocado, and olive oil daily.
    6) Make sure you’re eating 2-3 fruit servings each day.
    7) Make sure you’re eating at least 3 servings of vegetables each day.

This is the advice their experts give people that count calories and want to lose weight. Toss in a whole wheat (low cal) english muffin to your breakfast…skip the chocolates for a snack and have a piece of fruit with either yogurt or a serving of nuts….I don’t know much about your lunch so I cannot comment about it….Then have an afternoon snack of veggies, a serving of Fat free dressing and a 1/2 or full serving of a healthy whole wheat cracker or 1/2 a whole wheat pita…..dinner could be a big salad with chicken and/or shrimp and light dressing or any other protein, veggie, carb combination.

DONT PANIC. the advice above is obviously great and, FOR ME, I make it a habit to try NEVER to eat a carb without some protein.

    ever.

apple? have some cheese or, say, turkey slices

brownie? make youra** have some cottage cheese too.

I could ramble about the science of why but I wont (here anyway :)) it’s all about managing your blood sugar levels!

    todays a new day.

I know! How can you go threw the whole day and do great, and get home and in 15 minutes, eat as many calories as you did all day!

One thing I started doing was as soon as I get home, I make a healthy snack and just sit down with my kids and talk about our day for about 20 minutes. I’ve transitioned from day to evening, I am not starving so I won’t be tempted to eat while I am making dinner.

Oh, and BTW, if I have a sheet cake in my fridge leftover from a birthday party. I won’t actually take a slice, I get one fork, have a bite, then go back again and again until eventually I will just throw it in the trash!

But, move on, its a new day!!

It’s crazy how we self-sabotage ourselves at times! Throw out the rest of the brownies!

When I first changed the way I ate, I did that all the time. Nutella was my culprit of choice. I just couldn’t stop at one little tsp! Which is why I don’t buy it anymore. I have cut so many of those craving foods out of my life, though, that even when they are around I don’t crave them like I used to. It really is true that glucose is addictive and so once you go without it for a while you don’t crave it anymore, but the second you have it your body turns on these sensors that tell you you want more and more (there is actually scientific evidence that this occurs). Another thing that really helped me was to plan out all of my calories for the day in the morning or the night before. As long as I had a set of guidelines, I rarely strayed from my list!

And remember, the most important thing is that today is just one day and so you can’t really have done that much harm, so don’t beat yourself up too much.
